How to Use
- Choose a "Rack Size" (42U standard / 45U / 47U / 48U) and enter "Reserved Space (U)" for cabling, airflow, and device clearance — typically 2-4U.
- Under "Add Device", enter a device name, U height, quantity, and power draw in watts (optional, defaults to 0), then click "Add Device" to add it to the list. Repeat for as many device types as needed.
- The "Device List" table shows every device added along with its U subtotal. Click "Remove" on a row to delete it, or "Clear All" to wipe the list (with a confirmation prompt).
- The "Results" section automatically shows total device count, total U consumed, racks needed (automatically computed once devices exceed a single rack's capacity), total power draw (W), and estimated heat output (BTU/hr).
- "Rack Allocation Detail" renders an ASCII text bar chart for each rack, showing U used, total usable U, and utilization percentage. Click "Load Sample Data" to fill in six example devices: router, core switch, firewall, server×3, UPS, and patch panel.

FAQ
How are devices allocated across multiple racks?
The tool fills the first rack's usable U (rack size minus reserved space) with devices in order, and once the current rack can't fit the next device, it automatically starts the next rack — continuing until every device is placed and the total rack count is tallied.
How is the heat output (BTU/hr) calculated?
The tool converts the total power draw (W) into BTU/hr using the standard power-to-heat conversion used in data center cooling — a rough order-of-magnitude reference. Actual cooling needs also depend on room temperature and airflow design, so consult a proper HVAC calculation for real deployments.
What exactly does "reserved space (U)" do?
It's subtracted from the rack's total U capacity and excluded from usable device space, reserved for cable management, device airflow clearance, and future expansion. 2-4U is the typical suggestion, adjustable as needed.
Does entering 0 for power affect the calculation?
Devices with 0W power draw (e.g. passive devices like a patch panel with power left blank) are excluded from the total power and heat estimate, but are still counted normally toward U consumption and device count — the two are calculated independently.
Does deleting a device from the list affect the rack allocation result?
Yes — deleting a device immediately re-runs the full rack allocation calculation (total U, rack count, power, heat, and every rack's utilization bar all refresh automatically), no manual recalculation needed.
